CFEED's Sustainable Revolution in Live Feed Production

Bio-Safe Solutions & Commitment

In the search for sustainable aquaculture, CFEED is a frontrunner, revolutionizing live feed production with a commitment to eco-friendly practices.

Specializing in the cultivation of high-quality copepod eggs, CFEED's on-land facility in Norway represents a beacon of sustainability in an industry facing increasing environmental challenges.

This article explores CFEED's dedication to sustainability at every stage of their live feed production cycle.

Eliminating the Effect on the Natural Environment

CFEED's state-of-the-art on-land facility in Norway is a testament to our commitment to sustainability.

By opting for closed land-based operations, we minimize our environmental impact, avoiding the potential negative consequences associated with traditional practices of harvesting live copepods from the ocean that will always affect the natural environment.

The sustainable journey begins with the cultivation of bio-secure copepod eggs. Under controlled conditions, these eggs are produced in a manner that prioritizes both environmental responsibility and the health of the natural populations. This sustainable cultivation approach ensures that CFEED's live feed production aligns with the principles of ecological balance.

Hatching Sustainability - On-Site and On-Time

CFEED's sustainability ethos continues at the customer's facility, where copepod eggs are set up for hatching.

The rapid 24-hour turnaround time to produce hatchery-ready copepod nauplii is not only efficient but also aligns with sustainable practices by minimizing resource use and energy consumption.

Natural Nutrition for Sustainable Larval Rearing

Natural Nutrition for Sustainable Larval Rearing

A cornerstone of CFEED's sustainable approach is the elimination of the need for additional enrichment. By providing copepod nauplii with optimal natural nutrition, CFEED reduces reliance on external inputs, creating a more self-sustaining and eco-friendly live feed solution.

The precise sizing of Arcatia tonsa copepod nauplii at 100µm enhances the success of larval rearing and contributes to sustainability. By aligning with the natural feeding preferences of marine fish larvae, CFEED's live feed promotes healthier growth without excess waste or inefficiencies.

The introduction of copepods as live starter feed into aquaculture has a profound impact on growth rate, fish health, and feed conversion efficiency, significantly improving the overall nutritional dynamics in later production stages. The inclusion of copepods as starter feed results in a remarkable enhancement of feed conversion rates, making the demand for feed in later stages considerably more efficient.

CFEED's dedication to providing natural nutrition for sustainable larval rearing, eliminating the need for enrichment, and focusing on on-land closed production with the limited use of raw material solidifies our commitment to eco-friendly live feed solutions. Finally, the incorporation of copepods into aquaculture demonstrates a significant improvement in growth, fish health, and feed conversion efficiency within later production stages, contributing to a more resource-efficient feed demand for the whole industry. Our approach in CFEED showcases how sustainable practices can be seamlessly integrated into every stage of the live feed production cycle.

Zero hunger

SDG 2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition. C-Feed actively contributes to the growth in aquaculture by helping the hatcheries to grow more and healthier fish, and through this serve the global population with more nutritious and healthy food. C-Feed’s product enables a more sustainable food supply and directly impacts the achievement of SDG 2.

Good health and well being

Seafood has high levels of healthy Omega-3, vitamins and proteins. C-Feed's product has a high level of nutritional value that will help retain these quality parameters in the fish, and contribute to the growth of healthy food.

Responsible consumption

C-Feed ensures that own practices with a closed and integrated production process do not lead to over-extraction of resources or to the degradation of environmental resources. Our production requires mainly light, CO2 and small amounts of fertilizers. C-Feed also continuously explores the opportunities for more efficient use of input factors and utilization of residual products.

Climate action

SDG 13 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. Production in controlled aquaculture will be a key solution in a changing climate to ensure continued food supply with low emissions and carbon footprints. C-Feed also uses CO2 in the production – CO2 derived as a residual product from other industries. In C-Feed’s production, CO2 is transformed to oxygen through photosynthesis in our algae production.

Life below water

C-Feed’s product increase aquaculture production, actively reducing the need for wild caught fisheries and potential over-fishing. In addition, an important market for C-Feed is to use our product to farm threatened species. Through sharing of knowledge in our value chain C-Feed also contributes to reduction of feed waste and thus less impact on the marine environment.

Partnerships for the goals

C-Feed works directly with producers around the world to ensure maximum productivity and impact from the use of copepods. This results in a greater production of seafood and more jobs across different sectors around the world. C-Feed also actively contributes to awareness on sustainable solutions, sharing of knowledge, innovation and best practices among our partners and other players in the market.
