Our production methods and technology are based on 25 years world-leading research and development at SINTEF Fisheries and Aquaculture. The key knowledge items in C-Feed are related to the production of copepod eggs, which includes automated harvesting, cleaning, feeding and quality control in stable production conditions. Our hatching manual is publicly available and can be requested. It shows how easy it is to hatch and on grow copepods to the right size. We believe the industry as a whole would benefit from openness and sharing of new knowledge regarding handling and use of copepods.

SINTEF as a Technology Partner
Traditionally, copepods have been harvested directly from the sea or produced in semi-extensive and extensive systems. However, these methods rely on blooms of natural phyto- and zooplankton organisms and allow limited control over species composition and the introduction of diseases and parasites.
Intensive production of copepod eggs from the calanoid copepod Acartia tonsa Dana has been running successfully at SINTEF SeaLab for over a decade. These eggs are cleaned, disinfected and stored in a refrigerator at 2°C. Thereafter, the eggs can be shipped world-wide to end-users and used as an inoculum for live feed production in commercial hatcheries.
